Renowned Italian lighting brand Foscarini takes up residency at über chic ONEROOM Gallery, in Shoreditch. For the first time, Foscarini has a dedicated exhibition and installation of its lighting in the UK. Set over four floors and a roof terrace, the exhibition is in collaboration with sustainable artist and architect, James Wines and his daughter, designer, Suzan Wines, who have created a dramatic walk-through space called ‘Reverse Room’ showcasing their new Light Bulb series for the brand. This show quite literally turns the perception of lighting on its head.
A designer art-house collection, The Light Bulb Series consists of a limited and numbered edition of pieces made in Murano glass – based on a reflection of the light bulb as an archetype, with its typical bulb-like shape, produced in a series of surprising provocations. James Wines translates this reflection with explorations that revolve around the principal themes that have always guided his architectural research. These are inversion, dissolution, nature, all those statuses of “architectural flaw” which make it possible to rethink reality, giving it shape and then at the same time breaking down its boundaries. Wines’ light bulbs are in turn melted, broken, inverted, turned black, and invaded by nature. A propensity towards experimentation, doing better but also doing things differently, which has always animated Foscarini as well.
The “Reverse Room” installation is devised to emphasise the surreal quality of these experimentations: in a dark-walled room, upside down and slanted, with monochrome tables and chairs, the table lamps blink down from the ceiling, whereas the suspension lamps peep out from the floor. It is an invitation to think of a world, of design and therefore of what is possible, where it is always imaginable to shed light differently.
In addition, Foscarini’s latest designs will be unveiled in the UK for the first time alongside classics from its world-famous collections. The exhibition will run from 22nd-24th May 2018 for the duration of Clerkenwell Design Week and is open to all.
