An artist in light and shadow, Joseph Svoboda was a prominent figure in theatre and set design. With a portfolio of over 700 works, Svoboda designed sets for Laurence Olivier’s National Theatre, the Prague Conservatory and was appointed as the Czech National Theatre’s principal designer in 1948.

“When I sit alone in a theatre and gaze into the dark space of its empty stage, I’m frequently seized by fear that this time I won’t manage to penetrate it.”
